NameSurfer 7.6.4.1

Search and modify

The Search and modify tool can be used to list a collection of NameSurfer data objects which match the conditions you specify.
Please note: if the Javascript has been disabled in the web browser, or user permissions do not allow access to a NameSurfer section corresponding to a widget, the widget(s) will not be displayed.

The Search rules pane

First select what type of objects you wish to search for, i.e. target type.
Possible choices are:

  • IPAM block
  • IPAM host
  • IPAM owner
  • DNS zone
  • DNS node
  • DNS resource record
  • DNS view

Once a target (e.g. IPAM block) is selected, please specify one or more search rules that all results must match.

Existing values for the object's property (labeled "Column") which the rule filters by can be viewed by clicking on the down pointing arrow at the right of the "Value" field to open the dropdown, or alternatively moving the text cursor to the Value input field and pressing the down arrow on the keyboard.

When you type into the Value field, it will autocomplete your typing against the beginning of existing values in the system (the selected comparison Condition does not affect autocomplete).

Once you have specified the rule's three fields, you can click the "Add rule" button in order to add another rule to narrow the search results.

After this, please click the Search button to retrieve the objects that match your rules. The Search results pane will open.

The Search results pane

Here you will see the list of objects matching your rules set in the previous step. The number of objects is displayed in the Search results pane's title bar.

Now you can manually select objects from the list in order to perform an operation on them. You can click on the checkbox next to the object's name to select and deselect objects individually. You can also click the checkbox in the list's header row to select all objects. A second click on it will deselect all objects.

Another way to manipulate object selection is by clicking on the object name column. You can select a range of objects by first clicking on the name of an object, selecting only that object, and then clicking on another object's name column while holding down the Shift key. You can toggle the selection of individual objects also by holding down the Ctrl key and clicking on an object's name column.

Once you have completed your selection, select the operation to perform on the selection from the "Select operation" dropdown. A button which starts the operation will appear. Click that button (e.g. "Delete selected") to perform the operation. The operation is run on the server. This may take a while if there are many (several hundreds) objects selected. When done, the Operation pane will appear, and the Search rules and Search results panes will both be collapsed.

All three panes can be collapsed or expanded by clicking on the title bar at the top of the pane.

Please note: If you select another target type in the Search rules pane, the Operation and Search results panes will disappear (if their contents were visible). Similarly, if you select another operation to perform in the Search results pane, the Operations pane will disappear if visible.

The Operation pane

Here you will see the list of objects you selected for the operation in the Search results pane, along with the status of the operation for each object. The number of objects in the list is displayed in the Search results pane's title bar.

Limitations:
This tool is a recent addition and its operation availability is still limited. The available operations are Delete and Add/update Information, with supported target types of IPAM Block, IPAM Host, and IPAM Owner. This functionality will be extended in upcoming releases.

The heading text above the object list states the summary of the operation's results. There may be warnings for some objects, which happens e.g. when deleting a non-empty IPAM block.
If there are warnings, you will be asked for a confirmation. In order to confirm and proceed with the operation, select the objects with the Warning status that you wish to confirm the operation for and click the "Confirm/Retry operation for selected" button. A new operation run will now be performed, and the Operation pane's contents will be updated to reflect the results of the new run. Further runs are possible if necessary by repeating the confirm step.
