BIND (Berkeley Internet Name Daemon) is a common name server implementation. It can be freely redistributed. Most UNIX vendors bundle a version of BIND with their operating system. There are also versions of BIND available for Windows NT.

BIND can act simultaneously as a primary, secondary, and caching name server providing recursive service.

As NameSurfer is a dedicated primary name server, it relies on one or more separate BIND servers to provide secondary and caching/recursive name service.
