NameSurfer 7.6.4.1

General

The node page displays all the DNS data belonging to a domain name, and lets you make changes to those data. It is also used for entering initial data when creating a new name.

The page title

The page title changes with the type of data stored under the name. For example, a name that has an IP address associated with it is considered a "Host", while a name with only an MX record is called a "Mail route".

The name entry field

The domain name whose data are being displayed or entered is shown in an editable text entry field. If you are creating a new name, the field is empty and you need to fill in a new domain name. The name may be given either in a relative or in the fully qualified form (for example, "fred" or "fred.namesurfer.com").

When editing an existing entity, this field can be edited to rename the entity.

If you create a new zone and have several DNS views defined in the system, a selector will be shown to let you select a view of the zone to be created.

Generate reverse zone name

The name for a reverse zone can be generated from an ip address and a bitmask entered in corresponding input fields. Clicking the "Convert" button generates it and the name is output into the input field below the "Generate zone name" section. Note: the zone itself is not created at this point yet. Please see the instructions below.

Data fields

Following the name entry field, there is a varying number of entry fields displaying the current DNS data for the name, or allowing the entry of new data. Usually, there is one field for each resource record attached to the name.

If the title preceding the entry field is a hypertext link, it leads to a page of additional online help on the resource record in case.

Most of the resource record types are displayed as text entry fields. To remove such a record, simply clear the entry field to an empty string (for example, by selecting the whole text using the mouse and pressing the delete key), and then submit the form using the OK button.

Submit buttons

At the bottom of the form, there is a set of submit buttons.

OK

Accepts the current contents of the form and makes any changes permanent. In some cases, you may be prompted for additional information. Exits the form.

Remove

Removes the domain name completely, together with all of its data.
